BREAKING THE VEILS: WOMEN ARTISTS FROM THE ISLAMIC WORLD Catalogue de l’exposition de peintures, Naples, Palazzo Reale, 12 juillet- 15 septembre 2004 – par Wijdan Ali et Khalid Khreis, Amman 2002 (angl); format 26x26; pp. 149 ; ISBN 1975/8/2002 « Rompre les barrières : femmes artistes du monde islamique » est une tentative qui à travers la réunion des travaux de 51 artistes femmes de pays islamiques aussi variés que l’Indonésie ou le Yémen, cherchent à casser les stéréotypes de la « femme islamique » ; le terme « islamique » entendu dans sa valeur culturelle et non religieuse. Les artistes ne sont pas toutes musulmanes et leurs travaux ne parlent pas exclusivement de la religion.

L’exposition s’articule autour des tableaux et eaux-fortes de femmes artistes qui vivent dans 21 pays islamiques : l’Algérie, le Barhein, le Bangladesh, l’Egypte, l’Indonésie, l’Iran, l’Irak, la Jordanie, le Koweït, le Liban, la Malaisie, le Maroc, l’Oman, le Pakistan, la Palestine, l’Arabie Saoudite, le Soudan, la Tunisie, la Turquie, les Emirats Arabes Unis, le Yémen. Ces femmes sont de confessions diverses (islamique, chrétienne, bouddhiste, hindouiste). Leurs œuvres ont des thématiques diverses, reflétant différentes conditions de vie, politique, nationale et répondent à des usages locaux et sociaux ou des thèmes abstraits d’une valeur esthétiques élevant l’âme et l’esprit de celui qui les regarde. Les matériaux utilisés sont également très variés : huile, acrylique, aquarelle, gravure, gouache, sérigraphie, eaux-fortes, collage, impression photographique. Les œuvres exposées viennent de la collection permanente de la National Gallery of Fine Arts de Jordanie fondée par la Royal Society of Fine Arts d’Amman en 1980. C’est le siège thématique de la Fondazione Laboratorio Mediterraneo qui à travers la célébration de son dixième anniversaire, a voulu inclure la présentation de cette exposition à Naples.

Nue sous le vieux « bargo » de ma grand-mère, je me recroqueville dans la position du fœtus, la main entre les jambes encore ensanglantées. Je revois encore comme en playback la fulgurance de cette lame assassine qui agressa mon intimité, ma féminité et mon humanité. Oui, mon humanité car, j’ai cessé d’être une personne depuis que cette vieille femme aux mains fossilisées avait jeté son dévolu sur mes amies et moi, avec la complicité active de nos parents, des voisins et de tout le village...
